Self-Advocacy Grassroots Campaign - This Florida Developmental Disabilities Council’s self-advocacy project is designed to increase the self-advocacy skills of individuals with developmental disabilities living in Florida. The Council has partnered with the Center on Human Policy at Syracuse University on this initiative. The goal of the second year of this project is to continue establishing a state-wide, independent, self-advocacy movement by providing training and technical assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities interested in working in self-advocacy groups located in their communities. A statewide training and networking meeting will be held in October 2008 to strengthen connections between local groups and to foster the development of a statewide perspective as the movement grows.
2009 CARD Pre-Conference Day – The Council has partnered with the Florida Atlantic University, Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (CARD) to sponsor a pre-conference breakout day at the 2009 CARD Conference which will be held on January 16, 2009, in West Palm Beach. The pre-conference day will feature a keynote speaker and six breakout sessions that will provide an opportunity for participants to learn new strategies and ideas related to living, working and learning as adults with disabilities in their communities.
Transportation Guidebook – This Council initiative is designed to provide individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, and their advocates with county specific transportation information that can be used to help plan travel in their communities. The Council has partnered with the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research to develop this user friendly guidebook which includes local maps, fare rates and other transportation related contact information. It is anticipated that this resource will be available for distribution in October 2008.
Disaster Preparedness Guide – This Council initiative is designed to provide individuals with developmental disabilities with Florida-specific information on disaster preparedness. The guide is divided into three sections and includes a series of questions in a workbook format that can be completed by the user. Readers will be able to transfer their answers to these questions into a blank disaster plan, which is included as the last section of the guide. Topics include: Florida’s Emergency Management System, Disaster Supply Kits, Emergency Shelters, and the Special Needs Registry.
Management Services Guidebook - Entitled “Your Life, Your Way”, this Council initiative is designed to provide individuals with developmental disabilities, their families and their advocates with information on successfully managing their in-home supports and services.
