Highlights & Celebrations

  • Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month: FDDC emphasized that awareness is just the beginning, focusing on creating opportunities, removing barriers, and promoting respect and inclusion for individuals with developmental disabilities across Florida.
  • World Down Syndrome Day: Celebrated on March 21 to raise awareness and honor the contributions of people with Down syndrome, symbolizing trisomy 21 and encouraging advocacy and community support.
  • DD Day Appreciation: Recognition and thanks extended to all who attended and supported DD Day, highlighting strong community engagement and advocacy efforts.

Advocacy Awards

  • Shavaughn “Shevie” Barnes – Recipient of the 17th Annual Idelio Valdes Leadership and Advocacy Award, honoring her impactful work as a self-advocate and commitment to community-centered advocacy.
  • Judee Samuels – Recipient of the 2026 Bobbie Lake Family Member Leadership and Advocacy Award for her leadership, collaboration, and dedication to creating lasting systems change for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Legislative & Advocacy Opportunities

  • Partners in Policymaking (PIP): Applications now open for this leadership training program that equips individuals with I/DD, family members, and guardians to advocate at local, state, and federal levels. Deadline: June 30, 2026.
  • Florida Self-Advocates Network’D Training: “Route to Self-Determination Train-the-Trainer” course available to help advocates deliver workshops that empower individuals with I/DD.
  • Florida Youth Leadership Forum (YLF): Scheduled for July 7–11, 2026 at Florida State University, helping youth ages 15–21 build leadership, self-advocacy, and independent living skills.

Media & Community Engagement

  • Podcast – “Our Work Matters”: Features conversations with self-advocates, families, and professionals sharing tools, resources, and strategies to promote inclusion and advocacy in local communities.
  • Video Series – “Our Care Matters”: Reached over 949,000 plays, amplifying stories of Floridians with developmental disabilities and their caregivers across the state.
  • In the News: Coverage includes innovative programs, advocacy efforts, and community stories such as accessible transportation initiatives, inclusive arts showcases, Special Olympics participation, autism awareness events, and policy developments!
