Week 9 – 3/16/26: Florida Legislature 2026 Session Update: Legislature Ends Session Without Passing a Budget
The Florida Legislature wrapped up its regular session on Friday, March 13, without completing several key items. Most notably, lawmakers failed to pass a state budget, which is the only bill they are legally required to pass.
What Happens Next:
The Governor has called a special session beginning April 20 focused solely on redistricting. Additional special sessions may be needed for the budget and property tax reform. Passing a budget is urgent, since the new fiscal year begins July 1 and a budget must be in place by June 30.
Bills the Council Supported:
Several bills the Council recommended did pass during the final week of the session. They now go to the Governor, who has 15 days to sign them, veto them, or let them become law by taking no action. As of March 15, no bills have reached his desk yet.
