Announcements
- FDDC shared a leadership update announcing that Jim DeBeaugrine will serve temporarily as Acting Executive Director while the Council recruits a permanent Executive Director. Valerie Breen remains on extended medical leave and does not intend to renew her current contract.
- A new FDDC resource explains how individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families can work effectively with a case manager to connect with resources, support independence, and improve quality of life.
- FDDC’s Fiscal Year 2025 Annual Report highlights progress in Year 4 of its 5-year state plan, including training, practical tools, advocacy, and projects supporting systems change statewide.
- A back-to-school guide from The Arc offers families of children with disabilities information about IEPs and 504 plans, education rights, self-advocacy, school supports, and preparing for the new school year.
What We’re Celebrating
- In recognition of National Senior Citizens Day, Susan Kabot, Chief of Programs and Research, shared a message about the importance of independent living and supports for older Floridians.
- Council Member Carla Mercer and Director of Programs Jennifer Chung, PhD, represented FDDC at the 2026 Florida Conference on Aging.
- FDDC recognized International Assistance Dog Week, celebrating assistance dogs, the people they support, and the importance of high standards for training, care, and animal welfare.
Opportunities
- The September 7 AMPLIFY! topic is “Getting Out the Disability Vote!” FL SAND leaders and Fellows meet monthly to give self-advocates an opportunity to share questions, thoughts, and experiences related to disability advocacy in Florida.

- The Our Work Matters podcast shares tools, resources, and conversations with project partners, family members, caregivers, and self-advocates to help people advocate for the developmental disabilities community and promote inclusion.
- The Our Care Matters video series has reached 1,131,846 video plays, helping amplify the voices of Floridians with developmental disabilities and their caregivers.
